Wilmington is approximately 14 miles away by boat. Southport is another 23 miles south down the Cape Fear River. Snows Cut is another 13 miles south of Wilmington, with Carolina Beach and its inlet to the Atlantic another mile south. North of the inlet is Masonboro Island, a 7-mile-long barrier island. The Wrightsville Beach Bridge is another 13 miles north along the intracoastal waterway. You can get to Wrightsville Beach in a couple of hours, but bear in mind the Cape Fear River is tidal in that area, and currents can be strong. If the current is against you, it can be very slow going.
