Wharf Landing is an ambitious project about three miles west of Edenton, North Carolina, on the north shore of the Chowan River on the western end of the Albemarle Sound. It was to be built in two phases, each encompassing 30-acre plots centered on two “L”- shaped basins dug into the mainland. The first phase consisted of 16 buildings, each containing 6 condominiums. It appears that only 7 of the buildings, 42 condominium units, were ever completed. The marina, a pool, and a fitness center/clubhouse were also completed. My search for information was not particularly fruitful, but here is the correct story. The local developer died, leaving his business along with the incomplete project to his family. They listed the property some time ago, and it appears to have been sold to a buyer in Georgia who currently has it listed at 42 acres for $3.4 million. The second phase was planned to be mostly bungalows around the second basin with approximately 100 additional boat slips.
What has been completed is very nice. They are mostly 3-bedroom, 2-bath units around 1,550 sq ft. The slips are very nice. Boats are docked diagonally with plenty of room to maneuver. These are single slips with a full finger on one side, with pilings beyond, and could accommodate up to 40-footers. All of the slips have individual utility pedestals. A ramp is available just off the property to the northwest from a public launch.
The project is for sale. A purchaser could complete or modify the project. If you’re interested, please get in touch, and we’ll check the project’s current status.
As for boating destinations, you’re minutes away from historic Edenton, a true hidden gem of North Carolina’s inland waterways. To the north is the Chowan River; to the west, up the Roanoke River, is Plymouth, North Carolina. This is still a very lightly populated area of North Carolina. Numerous small towns are worth exploring: Hertford and Elizabeth City on the north shore, and Plymouth and Columbia on the south shore. If you are up for a real adventure, Manteo is about 60 miles east, with the Oregon Inlet another 13 miles south of Manteo. A canal also runs from the Alligator River to the Pongo River, which empties into the Pamlico River. You can go west to Washington, NC, east into the Pamlico Sound, south to Oriental, and on to New Bern.
