Sand Dollar Shores has a well sheltered marina dug into the mainland protecting boats docked along the north shore from the constant buffeting from the intracoastal waterway. There are slips at the marina for 16 boats. There are 10 individual floating docks which rise and fall on piles. Each is connected to the shore by an aluminum gangway. Boats are tied off on each side with additional piles to secure the boats. The docks are approximately 30 feet in length. There is one slip on the south side that appears to be a small boat launch. There are utility pedestals along the shore with electrical and water service.
Just to the east is Masonboro Island, 7.5 miles of undeveloped and pristine beach which can be accessed from the intracoastal waterway.
The Sand Dollar Shores marina is 3.7 miles from the Carolina Beach inlet, an inlet which is not maintained and can be tricky to negotiate at times. It is also located 4.8 miles south of Masonboro Inlet, one of the best inlet in North Carolina. It is well maintained with stone jetties over a mile wide and leading 2.5 miles out to open water. It is very straight with no shifting channels to follow.
